About

Ronin Romero

Author - Creator - Novelist - Animal Lover

Ronin Romero was born in Houston, Texas in the late 80’s. His father was an avid Van Lustbader fan. The name Ronin came from one of Eric Van Lustbader’s earliest series titled The Sunset Warrior Trilogy, which is quite fitting. When he was eight years old Ronin moved with his mother, father and sister to southern Vermont. The secluded countryside and peculiar hidden towns were an inspiration that led Ronin down a path of creativity. Starting to write short stories and poetry at that time, he realized that it was possible to create and explore anything that can be imagined.

By sixth grade, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings were all the rage. Ronin was reading Stoker and Shelley between assigned installments of Rowling and Tolkien. History and English became his favorite subjects, and that would never change.  His eighth grade English teacher recognized his potential and showed him the wonders of Aristophanes, Homer, Shakespeare, Steinbeck, and countless other classics. This was the final push Ronin needed to determine what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. Immediately, his Windows 97 version of Microsoft Word was filling his family’s desktop with documents upon documents of novel outlines, character profiles and setting descriptions.

Just when he thought he couldn’t possibly be surrounded by more creativity, he joined a youth writing group in western Massachusetts. For five years he submitted, edited, perfected and published poems and short stories along with dozens of other youths in the area. He went to Drury High School in the artsy town of North Adams, Massachusetts, building a writing portfolio and exploring his creativity through as many means as possible. Youth programs, Gay-Straight Alliance groups, cinematography courses, writing workshops, and even the tennis team, all kept him busy. Although History and English were his best subjects, his favorite teacher was Ms. Pepper in Art. Her imagination and discipline were unmatched and unlimited. There was never a way to predict what she would come up with, or how she would inspire her students. She showed him that there were many ways to look at anything from a painting or a sculpture, to a person or a philosophy.

During his senior year, an essay Ronin wrote about Johann Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press was recognized and published in a single volume of Believing in Greatness.
After high school, Ronin moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico in order to connect with his extended family, and branch out into larger markets. Since then, Ronin has worked at a number of odd jobs to fund his writing dream. Retail, movie theaters, grocery stores, call centers – nothing was off limits. He even sold insurance freelance for a year, and briefly ran a copywriting business. It was an arduous search for exactly what Ronin wanted to do with his writing, and in the end, he came back to what had started him on his writing journey: fiction and poetry.

He got married in 2015, quickly building a home full of ferrets, dogs, cats, fish and a husband.
In 2017, his first self-published collection of short stories was released, called Opaque Ambiguities: Short Stories and Poems to Draw You in and Confuse You. It included many of Ronin’s earlier works: poems and short stories from his youth, along with a few new additions.  In January of 2021 Ronin released a re-mastered version, complete with updates, edits and even Ronin’s latest short stories, called Tangible Despair.

That’s not all he’s been working on!

Since moving to Albuquerque in 2009, Ronin has completed two novels  in his GLYPH series, published by Plot Duckies Publishing Company. GLYPH is an epic post-apocalyptic, sci-fi, action-adventure series with deep mythology, and a kick ass band of warriors ready to defend Earth from an extraterrestrial God of Chaos! The first two installments, titled Revelations and Testament, are out and available for purchase.

Right now, when he isn’t writing or editing, you can find Ronin working with a local writer’s group called Querque Quills, building his following within the Twitter writing community, attending workshops such as Short-Story-A-Thons which are put on by a local Albuquerque legend, gardening with his husband, and babysitting at least one of his five young nephews.

With so much life and inspiration around him, there’s no telling what further atrocities will come from the unhinged mind of Ronin Romero.
